Hi! Welcome to the English page of Typing Hero App! This is a free, browser-based typing tutor, currently set up for the QWERTY (AZ) keyboard layout. Whether you're a total beginner or just want to type faster, here in English you can learn the 10-finger touch typing method step by step. No signup, no downloads — everything runs in your browser, and all your progress stays with you. What is 10-finger touch typing, and why is it worth learning?
Touch typing (also called the 10-finger method) means pressing every key with a specific finger — without looking down at the keyboard. The method was invented by Frank McGurrin back in 1888, and it's been taught around the world ever since. Why is it great?
- You'll be faster. A beginner hunt-and-peck typist writes 20–30 words per minute (WPM), while a 10-finger pro easily reaches 60, sometimes even 100 WPM. The difference is huge.
- You'll make fewer mistakes. Since the same finger always presses the same letter, your muscles learn the movements on their own — this is called muscle memory.
- Your eyes won't get tired. You don't have to keep looking back and forth between the keyboard and the screen.
- You can focus better. Pay attention to your thoughts, not to the keyboard.
- Useful at school, work, and hobbies. Writing essays, reports, letters, blog posts, or even code — fast typing saves time.
In English, touch typing is especially useful because English is the most common typing language in the world. Once you master it on the QWERTY (AZ) keyboard, you can use the same skills almost anywhere — programming, online chats, school assignments, you name it.
About the QWERTY (AZ) layout
QWERTY is the world's most widespread keyboard layout. American inventor Christopher Sholes designed it in 1873, originally for typewriters. The letter arrangement was set up so that frequently-typed letter pairs wouldn't jam the typewriter's hammers. Today we use it on digital keyboards, but the form has stuck — that's why it's so common worldwide. In English, it works perfectly out of the box, since English uses the standard Latin alphabet with no special accented characters.

How to use the interface
The app is simple and friendly. When you first open it, you'll see the level selection screen: lessons appear as tiles. The first tile is already unlocked (Level 1), the others are locked with a small padlock icon. To unlock a level, you have to complete the previous one — that's how you progress step by step.
The stars on each tile show how many stars you've earned at that level (max 5). Click an unlocked tile to start the lesson.
Important keys for navigating the interface:
- SPACE — move to the next phase of the lesson, or to the next level after the results screen. It works almost everywhere.
- Esc — close popup windows (modals).
- Enter — for example, to confirm your name input.
In the header you'll find the important buttons: Change user, Restart, and the language and keyboard dropdown menus. You can always return to the English home page by clicking the logo.
How does a lesson work? — The 3 phases
Every level is split into three phases. This helps you not just recognize letters, but actually learn how to use them:
Phase 1 — Lesson
First, the app introduces the new keys with a cute little animation. A mini keyboard shows green dots indicating which finger to move to which key from the home row. Then you type the displayed text at your own pace. There's no time limit in this phase — the goal is to type correctly.
Phase 2 — Letter Game
Now for the fun part! A 30-second flash game where random letters pop up on screen, and you have to hit the right one quickly. Building a streak of correct hits gives you a bonus: each accurate keystroke is worth more. This builds your reflexes and speed.
Phase 3 — Practice
Finally, you type real English words from the English word bank — using only the letters you've learned so far. This phase teaches the "rhythm": how a whole word flows under your fingers. Here's where you'll feel how much you've improved!
The app calculates the final result from the average of all three phases: average accuracy, average speed (WPM), and stars earned. It's worth repeating each lesson until you collect all 5 stars — this signals that your knowledge is solid and you're ready to move up to the next level!
What lessons will you play through?
On the QWERTY (AZ) keyboard in English, the curriculum has about 19 lessons, split into four big groups:
- Home row — 5 lessons. Where your hand rests. The keyboard has tactile bumps on the F and J keys to help your index fingers find their place without looking.
- Top row — 5 lessons. Most vowels and frequent consonants are here.
- Bottom row — 5 lessons. Less common letters and punctuation.
- Numbers — 4 lessons. Learn the number row above the letters.
The lesson order is designed so that you only learn 2–4 new letters per level. That way you won't feel overwhelmed, and your muscle memory has time to lock in the new movements.
Scoring and stars — How do you earn the most points?
The app uses a game-like point system to keep you motivated. Each level gives you 1 to 5 stars based on your performance:

Stars are calculated from the average of all three phases. Don't worry if you only get 2-3 stars the first time! You can retry a level any time, and if you earn more stars next time, your points grow too. Only new stars earn extra points — so once you have 5 stars on a level, you can't earn more points there, but it's still fun to keep breaking your own speed record!
Your point total is calculated like this:
points = number of stars × (50 + 10 × level number)
For example, 5 stars on Level 1 = 5 × 60 = 300 points. 5 stars on Level 10 = 5 × 150 = 750 points. The higher the level, the more each star is worth — so aim for the max stars every time!
The 8 ranks and their point requirements
As you collect points, you'll climb through higher and higher ranks. The app distinguishes 8 ranks. Your rank shows in the small "rank badge" in the header. In English, the ranks are:

Your rank always reflects the level you've reached. There's no upper limit — once you pass "Hero", you're a really, really good typist!
Choosing your language and keyboard layout
The app is available in 45 languages and supports 38 different keyboard layouts. English is one of the 45 main languages — other options include Hungarian, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Belarusian, Greek, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Croatian, Slovenian, Romanian, Turkish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Dutch, Vietnamese, and Lithuanian — to name just a few.
Use the language dropdown in the header to switch to another language any time. When you switch, the app automatically navigates to that language's own URL and loads its curriculum, accents, and word bank.
The keyboard layout dropdown lets you choose which physical keyboard you have. For example, if you're abroad with a different keyboard, just switch it here and the app updates the visuals instantly. The default for English is QWERTY (US), but you can switch to QWERTZ (DE) or any other layout if that's what you have. You can even experiment with the ergonomic layouts: Dvorak, Colemak, or Workman — these are cool, comfortable alternatives! (Note: to truly benefit from Dvorak, Colemak, or Workman's speed advantages, you need a physical Dvorak/Colemak/Workman keyboard — software-only switching just shows the layout on screen, but the key labels on your keyboard remain QWERTY.)

User profiles — Save, switch, return
The app supports multiple users on the same computer. That's handy because you, your sibling, parents, or friends can all use the app on the same device, with separate saved progress for each person.
When you earn your first point, the app asks you for a name (stored only in your browser — never sent to any server). After that, your progress saves under that name. Use the Change user button in the header any time to switch: pick an existing user, or add a new one.
What happens when you switch languages or keyboards?
- If you switch to another language (e.g., English ↔ Magyar): each language has independent progress. Your English points and stars stay even if you study Hungarian in the meantime. When you switch back to English, you continue right where you left off.
- If you switch keyboard layouts within the same language (e.g., QWERTY-US ↔ Dvorak): your English progress stays shared, only the keyboard visualization changes. You're learning the same lessons on different physical keys.
- Switching back to a previous user: all their stars, points, and best speeds load right back. Everything's exactly where they left it!
Saving in your browser — Data privacy
One of the app's important principles: all data stays in your own browser. There's no user account, no server, no cloud. Your progress is saved using a browser feature called localStorage — a safe, small storage area on your own machine that only Typing Hero App can access.
What this means for you:
- ✅ Privacy. No one sees your progress, we don't send it to marketers, we don't share it with third parties.
- ✅ No signup. No email, no password. Just show up and play!
- ✅ Fast. No server data to load.
- ⚠️ It only stays in this browser. If you open the app on another computer or browser (e.g., Chrome → Firefox), you'll have to start over there.
- ⚠️ Private browsing (incognito mode) doesn't save. When you close the private window, your progress is gone.
- ⚠️ If you clear your browser cache, your progress is also deleted.
If you want to make sure to keep your progress, always use the same browser on the same machine.
How to delete your progress
If you want to start completely fresh, click the Restart button in the header. You'll get two options:
- Only my data — deletes only the current user's progress. Other family members' saved data stays. You're logged out, and you can enter a new name.
- All users — deletes all saved users and all progress from your browser. This is like a "factory reset". Use it if, for example, you're selling the computer or you want everything completely clean and starting over from scratch.
Both options immediately and permanently delete the data, so the app shows a confirmation dialog before deleting. If you change your mind, just hit Cancel!
Tips for faster progress — How do you earn 5 stars?
Here are some friendly tips from professional typists:
- 🎯 Accuracy first, speed later. Typing fast with mistakes only builds bad muscle habits. Hit correctly first, then accelerate!
- ⏰ 15-20 minutes daily beats a 2-hour session once a week. Muscle memory builds from small, frequent repetitions.
- 👀 Don't look at the keyboard! Even when you're unsure. Trust your fingers — that's exactly what your brain is learning.
- 🪑 Good posture. Straight back, elbows at 90°, wrist not bent, monitor at eye level.
- 🤚 Focus on the F and J keys. Place your index fingers there — the tiny bumps help you find your spot without looking.
- 🎮 The Letter Game (Phase 2) is great for reflex-building. If you're unsure about a letter, just go for it!
- 📖 The Practice phase (Phase 3) builds word-level rhythm. English words have a natural flow of letters — feel the "melody" of typing.
- 🔥 Streaks (consecutive correct hits) are your new friend. One mistake breaks it — so rather type slower but flawlessly.
Be patient with yourself! On average, it takes 1-2 weeks of 15-20 minutes a day to see noticeable improvement. But you'll already smile after the very first week, seeing how much more accurate you've become! And with diligent practice, you can become a pro typist in just 1-2 months!

- Do I need to register to use it?
- No! Just open the app in your browser and start. The first time you earn a point, you enter a username, but it's only stored locally.
- How much does it cost?
- Totally free. No premium version, no subscription, and there will never be any cost to users.
- Does it work on mobile?
- You can open it on mobile, but learning 10-finger touch typing requires a physical keyboard. It won't work properly on phone or tablet on-screen keyboards.
- Which browsers are supported?
- Every modern browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Brave, Opera. The freshest versions give the best experience.
- What happens if I want to continue on another computer?
- Since progress is saved only in your browser, you'll have to start over on another machine or browser.
- What's the difference between QWERTY-US and other language layouts?
- QWERTY-US is the most common English keyboard. Other layouts (QWERTZ for German, AZERTY for French, etc.) move some letters around to fit the language. For example, QWERTZ swaps Y and Z because Z is more common in German. Try them side by side at QWERTY (US) and QWERTZ (DE) — interesting comparison!
- Can I type English on the ergonomic Dvorak or Colemak layouts?
- Yes, you can try the Dvorak or Colemak layouts! But to actually achieve faster typing speeds, you need a special Dvorak/Colemak keyboard with that physical layout — software switching alone won't give you the real speed benefit.
- How long does it take to learn 10-finger touch typing?
- With 15-20 minutes of daily practice, you'll be noticeably better in 1-2 weeks, and you might reach the 40-50 WPM range in just 1-2 months. It depends on the individual, but gradual progress is guaranteed.
- Is the app really safe with my data?
- Yes — we don't ask for or store any data about you, and no data leaves your browser. The app is a static website with no server-side component or database.
- What does the SPACE bar do in the interface?
- Space is a universal "next" button: between lesson phases, at the results screen, or to start the next level.
- How do I delete my progress?
- Use the Restart button in the header: either delete only your data, or all users' data. Details above in the "How to delete your progress" section.
- Is Dvorak really faster than QWERTY?
- Studies say it's more ergonomic — less finger movement for an average word. But speed depends on practice: a well-trained QWERTY typist can be just as fast as a Dvorak typist. Ergonomic layouts mainly reduce hand strain — assuming you actually have a Dvorak/Colemak physical keyboard!
