Why net WPM matters more than raw WPM

Every typing test gives you a raw WPM (total characters typed / 5 / minutes) and an accuracy percentage. The honest measure is net WPM:

Net WPM = Raw WPM × (1 − error rate)

Or equivalently: Net WPM = Raw WPM − (errors per minute / 5).

A typist at 70 raw WPM with 88% accuracy has a net WPM of about 62. A typist at 60 raw WPM with 98% accuracy has a net WPM of 59. They're nearly equal in real productivity, but the second typist feels effortless while the first feels stressful.
