The QWERTY keyboard layout is the most widely-used input method on Earth — billions of keyboards, smartphones, and devices ship with it as the default. Yet it's also one of the most criticized: every few years, an alternative layout (Dvorak, Colemak, Workman) is proposed as "obviously better", and yet QWERTY persists. Where QWERTY came from

QWERTY was created by Christopher Latham Sholes in 1873, working with backers James Densmore and George Yost. Sholes' typewriter (sold as the Sholes & Glidden, later the Remington No. 1) needed a key arrangement that worked with the mechanical typebar design — each letter hit the paper via a swinging arm, and adjacent typebars could jam if struck in rapid succession.

  • Sholes did consider mechanical jamming when designing the layout
  • Common letter pairs were sometimes separated (E + T, T + H) to reduce adjacent typebar collisions
  • But this was one of many constraints, not the dominant goal

What's not true:

  • QWERTY was NOT designed to be slow; it was designed to be non-jamming while still being usable
  • The "slow down typists" narrative was popularized in the mid-20th century by Dvorak advocates trying to make alternative layouts look obvious
  • In practice, skilled QWERTY typists can reach 100+ WPM — hardly "slow"

So: yes, mechanical considerations influenced QWERTY's design. No, it wasn't designed to be ergonomically optimal — but it also wasn't designed to be bad. It was a compromise that worked.

How QWERTY became universal

Several factors locked QWERTY in:

  1. Remington's commercial success — Remington's typewriters dominated the office market in the 1880s–1900s. Buying a typewriter meant buying QWERTY.
  2. Touch typing standardization — by 1900, Frank McGurrin's 10-finger method was taught on QWERTY. Typing schools across the US and Europe used QWERTY exclusively.

Alternative layouts (Dvorak, Colemak, Workman) claim 5–10% speed advantages and lower finger travel. The studies behind these claims are mixed — many show null results, others show small gains. But even accepting the optimistic numbers, the switching cost kills the value for most users:

  • 2–3 months of reduced productivity while you relearn
  • Discomfort using anyone else's keyboard for the rest of your life
  • Friction in collaboration (pair programming, public computers, ATMs in some countries)
  • 5–10% speed gain spread over a career, vs months of lost productivity now

For 95% of users, the math doesn't work. QWERTY is "good enough" and the switching cost is real.

  • People starting from zero (kids, true beginners)

Will QWERTY ever be replaced?

None have gained traction in mainstream adoption despite being widely available and free.

What might replace QWERTY:
