Net WPM vs Raw WPM vs CPM — Understanding Typing Metrics

Different typing tests use different metrics: WPM, raw WPM, net WPM, CPM. They sound similar but measure subtly different things. This guide explains each and tells you which one actually matters for your productivity.

The metrics

WPM (Words Per Minute)

The standard speed metric. 1 word = 5 characters including spaces (universal definition). A score of 60 WPM means 300 characters per minute.

Raw WPM

Total characters typed (including errors) / 5 / minutes. Doesn't penalize errors. Inflates your score if you type fast but inaccurately.

Net WPM

Raw WPM minus error penalty. The "real" productive typing rate.

  • Net WPM = Raw WPM × accuracy %
  • Or: Net WPM = Raw WPM − (errors per minute / 5)

CPM (Characters Per Minute)

Total characters typed per minute. CPM = WPM × 5. Some tests show this instead of WPM.

Accuracy %

Correctly-typed characters / total characters typed. 98%+ is good; below 95% you're losing significant time to backspacing.

The important relationship: net WPM matters

If your test shows 70 WPM raw at 85% accuracy:

  • Raw WPM: 70
  • Net WPM: 70 × 0.85 = 59.5
  • You're functionally a 60 WPM typist

If your test shows 60 WPM raw at 98% accuracy:

  • Raw WPM: 60
  • Net WPM: 58.8
  • You're a 59 WPM typist

These two typists are essentially equal in real productivity — the high-accuracy typist feels effortless; the low-accuracy typist feels stressful.

Best metric to track: net WPM at 98%+ accuracy. If a test only shows raw WPM and accuracy, calculate net mentally.

Common metric confusion

"WPM" in news headlines

When media reports "person types 150 WPM" they usually mean burst raw WPM. The same person's net sustained WPM is likely 110-120.

"WPM" in typing courses

Often raw WPM, sometimes net. Read the small print.

"Typing speed" for jobs

Usually means net WPM in real conditions. A job posting requiring "60 WPM" expects ~60 net WPM (≈ 70 burst raw).

Why CPM exists

Some industries (especially data entry) report CPM (characters per minute) instead of WPM. This is a holdover from older typing instruction.

  • 200 CPM = 40 WPM
  • 300 CPM = 60 WPM
  • 400 CPM = 80 WPM
  • 500 CPM = 100 WPM

Just multiply WPM × 5 to convert. Otherwise the two metrics are interchangeable.

What about Asian languages?

For character-based languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), WPM is meaningless — you type romaji/pinyin that converts to characters. Instead, CPM in the source language is the meaningful metric. A native Japanese typist might type 60 WPM in romaji but produce 200 characters/minute of actual Japanese.

The "1 word = 5 characters" convention

Why 5? It's an industry convention from the 1950s, based on average English word length. Different conventions exist:

  • 5 characters (most common, used by all major tests)
  • 5.5 characters (older convention)
  • Actual word boundaries (rare; misleading because long words = lower WPM)

Stick with the 5-character convention for comparability.
