How to Type in Swedish — Å, Ä, Ö Made Easy

· 2 min read · by Robin Érsek-Obádovics

Swedish has 3 letters not in English: Å Ä Ö. The Swedish keyboard (QWERTY-SE) has direct keys for all three on the right side. The same keyboard is used in Finland (despite Finnish being a completely different language family).

Swedish's 3 special letters

  • Å å — different sound from regular A
  • Ä ä — a with diaeresis
  • Ö ö — o with diaeresis

All are separate letters (not modifications of A and O) in the Swedish alphabet, sorted at the END (a-z-å-ä-ö, not within a-z).

QWERTY-SE layout

  • Å å: right of P — top-row right pinky reach
  • Ä ä: right of L — home-row right pinky reach
  • Ö ö: right of Ä — home-row far right

All on right side, controlled by right pinky. See QWERTY-SE layout deep-dive.

Common Swedish typing patterns

  • det, en, ett, är, och — common short words
  • inte, men, för, ska, kan — common verbs/conjunctions
  • förälder, möjlighet, närmaste — common ö/ä words
  • språk, krångligt, hjärta — words with multiple specials
  • Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö — proper nouns
  • fika (coffee break) — quintessential Swedish word

Swedish typing tips

  1. Right pinky workload — all 3 specials on right
  2. Don't substitute — "froskola" instead of "förskola" is wrong
  3. Capital Å for proper nouns (Åke, Åland)
  4. Same keyboard works for Finnish — Swedish/Finnish use same QWERTY-SE

Target: 50-60 WPM in 4-6 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Sweden and Finland share a keyboard?

Both use Å, Ä, Ö in their alphabets. Despite different language families, the letters needed are the same.

Is Swedish typing different from English?

Mainly different right-pinky use. Otherwise QWERTY-style. Easy transition for QWERTY-US users.

Can I type Swedish on QWERTY-US?

Possible via US-International (AltGr+] for å, AltGr+'+a for ä). Less efficient than QWERTY-SE.

What's the difference from Norwegian?

Different right-pinky letters: Sweden has Å/Ä/Ö; Norway has Å/Æ/Ø. See QWERTY-NO Norwegian.

Should I learn Swedish or Norwegian first if I want to learn both?

Either — they're mutually intelligible. Pick whichever you'll write more. Switching keyboards later takes 1-2 weeks.

Are there alternative Swedish layouts?

A few experimental layouts exist. QWERTY-SE is universal.
