How to Type in Finnish — Finnish Touch Typing Guide

Finnish shares the QWERTY-SE keyboard with Sweden — same Å, Ä, Ö layout. But Finnish uses ä much more heavily than Swedish, and has unique typing patterns: frequent double vowels (aa, ää) and double consonants (kk, tt, ss).

Finnish character set

Finnish alphabet uses:

  • Standard A-Z (though q, w, x, z are rare in native words)
  • Å å (mostly in Swedish loanwords)
  • Ä ä (very common in Finnish)
  • Ö ö (common in Finnish)

The Å is borrowed from Swedish heritage but Finnish itself rarely uses it natively. Mostly appears in Swedish-origin proper nouns (Åbo for Turku, Åland).

  1. Drill ä specifically — much more frequent in Finnish than Swedish
  2. Double letters require rhythm — kk, tt, ss often paired
  3. Long words common — Finnish agglutinates (puhetta puhuvat = those-who-speak-speech)
  4. Q, W, X are rare — don't worry about them in native Finnish
