How to Type in Magyar — A QWERTZ-HU Touch Typing Guide

· 2 min read · by Robin Érsek-Obádovics

Hungarian (Magyar) has more accented vowels than any other European language — 9 distinct accented vowels: á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü, ű. Plus the Y/Z swap (QWERTZ family). This guide covers fluent Hungarian touch typing on the QWERTZ-HU layout.

Hungarian's 9 accented vowels

Hungarian distinguishes vowel length AND vowel quality:

  • á: long a (different from short a)
  • é: long e
  • í: long i
  • ó: long o
  • ö: umlauted o (short)
  • ő: long umlauted o — UNIQUE TO HUNGARIAN
  • ú: long u
  • ü: umlauted u (short)
  • ű: long umlauted u — UNIQUE TO HUNGARIAN

The ő and ű (long umlauted vowels) appear in no other major language. See QWERTZ-HU layout deep-dive.

QWERTZ-HU layout essentials

  • Y/Z swap (QWERTZ family standard) — Z on top row, Y on bottom
  • All 9 accented vowels have direct keys on the right side
  • Heavy right-pinky workload
  • Numbers in standard top-row positions (unlike Czech)

The frequent ő and ű are the unique Hungarian challenge. Drill them specifically.

A 30-day Hungarian touch typing plan

Standard 30-day plan with Hungarian focus:

  • Week 1: Home row + ű/ö/ü positions
  • Week 2: Top + bottom rows including Z (top) and Y (bottom)
  • Week 3: Accents (á é í ó ú) + ő specifically
  • Week 4: Real Hungarian text with ű drills

Target: 45-55 WPM in 30 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the hardest Hungarian character to type?

ő and ű — long umlauted vowels unique to Hungarian. Drill them daily.

Can I type Hungarian on QWERTY-US?

Use US-International for accents — but you'd lose direct ő/ű access. QWERTZ-HU is far more efficient.

Is Hungarian typing slower than English?

About 10% slower due to extra accents + Y/Z confusion. Fluent typists reach 65-75 WPM.

Why Y/Z swap?

QWERTZ family heritage — Z is more common in Hungarian, so it's on the easier top-row position.

Should I use Hungarian Programmer's layout for code?

Many Hungarian programmers use QWERTY-US for code (better symbol access) + QWERTZ-HU for Hungarian text.
