How to Type Fast on Mobile Keyboards (Phone, Tablet)

· 2 min read · by Robin Érsek-Obádovics

Mobile typing is a different skill from touch typing on a keyboard. Different muscle memory (thumbs), different layouts (no physical keys), different speed ceilings (60-80 WPM possible with good technique, vs 100+ on physical keyboard).

Two-thumb typing (phone)

Setup

  • Hold phone with both hands
  • Both thumbs hovering over screen
  • Eyes on screen
  • Don't peek at thumbs — trust placement

Technique

  • Right thumb: right side of keyboard
  • Left thumb: left side
  • Some users: dominant thumb does everything (slower)

Realistic speeds

  • 30-40 WPM: average two-thumb
  • 50-60 WPM: skilled
  • 70+ WPM: elite (rare without swipe)

Swipe input (Gboard, SwiftKey)

Slide finger across letters without lifting:

  • 80% faster than tapping for many users
  • Especially good for one-handed typing
  • Autocorrect-dependent (will guess word)
  • Better for common words, worse for proper nouns

Swipe tips

  • Trust the predictor — type approximate, accept suggestion
  • Don't slow down for accuracy — speed = prediction strength
  • Slide capital first letter (apps differ how)

Voice input (often fastest)

  • 150-200+ WPM equivalent
  • Google Assistant / Siri / Whisper all excellent
  • Best for: long messages, dictating notes
  • Worst for: passwords, technical terms, public spaces

Touch typing + voice = mobile productivity combo.

Best mobile typing apps

Gboard (Google)

  • Best swipe input
  • Excellent autocorrect
  • Multilingual switching
  • Voice input integrated

SwiftKey (Microsoft)

  • Strong prediction
  • Customizable layout
  • Themes

iOS Built-in

  • Improved swipe in recent versions
  • Excellent QuickPath (Apple's swipe)

Tablet typing (different beast)

Two-hand thumb

Similar to phone but bigger keys.

10-finger touch

  • Tablet flat on desk
  • Surface-feel like flat keyboard
  • 40-50 WPM possible

With external keyboard

  • Best of both worlds
  • Use tablet as laptop replacement
  • Same touch typing skill applies

Mobile vs physical keyboard skill

Mobile typing skill DOESN'T transfer to physical keyboard (different muscles, different memory).

Physical touch typing DOES partially transfer to tablet 10-finger typing (layout knowledge).

Worth practicing separately if you do both heavily.

Common mobile typing mistakes

  • ❌ Looking at screen for every keypress
  • ❌ Single-thumb when two-thumb faster
  • ❌ Ignoring autocorrect (typing past obvious wrong words)
  • ❌ Not using swipe input
  • ❌ Fighting predictive text (fights you back)

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I match physical keyboard speed on mobile?

No — physical keyboards have higher ceiling. Mobile maxes around 70-80 WPM.

Best phone for typing?

Larger screen helps. iPhone Pro Max, Pixel XL, etc.

Should I use swipe?

If you don't already: try it for 2 weeks. Most users 2x speed.

Voice better than typing?

For long messages yes. For privacy/precision: typing.

Will touch typing skill help mobile?

Layout knowledge yes (where keys are). Muscle memory: no (different fingers).

Best mobile typing tutor?

Less common — most learn naturally. TapTyping app for iPad.

Maximize mobile typing

Use Gboard or SwiftKey, try swipe input, mix with voice. Different skill from physical touch typing — practice both separately.
