How to Warm Up Before Long Typing Sessions
Athletes warm up before games. Typists should too — especially before 2+ hour sessions. A 5-minute warm-up routine prevents stiffness, primes muscle memory, and prevents RSI. Skip it at your own risk.
The 5-minute warm-up
Minute 1: Finger stretches
- Spread fingers wide (10 seconds)
- Make fist, release (5 reps)
- Bend each finger backward gently (5 sec each)
- Wrist circles (5 each direction)
- Prayer stretch (palms together, lower) (30 sec)
Minute 2: Slow home row drill
asdf jkl; asdf jkl; asdf jkl; Slow, 100% accuracy. Reminds fingers where home is.
Minute 3: Weak-letter drill
Whatever your weak letters are (Keybr knows). 1 min focused practice.
Minute 4: Real typing flow
Random words, comfortable speed. Just for the rhythm.
Minute 5: Pushed-speed drill
Push to 110% of comfortable speed. Wake up the motor cortex.
After: full session at comfortable speed.
Why warm-up matters
- Reduces injury risk (muscles + tendons cold otherwise)
- Avoids first-15-min typo storm (no warm-up = first 15 min slow + error-prone)
- Cognitive priming (brain enters typing mode)
- Habit signal (warm-up = "session start")
Stretches in detail
Wrist flexor
- Arm extended forward, palm up
- Use other hand to gently bend fingers/palm down
- Hold 20 sec
- Switch arms
Wrist extensor
- Arm extended forward, palm down
- Other hand bends fingers/palm down
- Hold 20 sec
- Switch arms
Tendon glides
- Make fist
- Open to flat palm

When to warm up
- Always before 2+ hour sessions
- Especially after long break (returning to typing)
- Definitely if you have any wrist/hand history
- Skip for 5-min check-emails session
Mid-session warm-ups
Every hour during long sessions:
- Stand up + stretch (2-3 min)
- Wrist circles (30 sec)
- Eye distance focus (20 sec)
- Quick walk (60 sec)
Prevents end-of-day fatigue.
Post-session cool-down
- Hand massage (palm + finger pads)
- Wrist stretches (same as warm-up)
- Shake out hands (10 sec each)
Closes the session cleanly.
Equipment that helps warm-up
- Hand grip strengthener (squeeze 10x before)
- Stress ball (sustained squeeze + release)
- Massage gun on forearms (10 sec sweep) — modern luxury
- Hot water hand soak (cold hands)

Should I warm up before typing tests?
YES — testing cold = lower WPM. Warm up = honest measurement.
What if I have RSI history?
Warm up + cool down EVERY session, no exceptions.
Should kids do warm-ups?
Brief stretches yes, full routine no (low injury risk at age).
