Czech's 15 special characters

  • á, é, í, ó, ú — long vowels (acute accent)
  • ů — ring above (different long u sound) — unique to Czech

  • ý — long y

The ř — Czech's claim to fame

Ř represents a sound (voiced raised alveolar non-sonorant trill) that's notoriously difficult for non-native speakers. Even some Czech children struggle to pronounce it correctly until age 6-7.

For typing: ř is on the number row by default (Czech QWERTZ-CS replaces 4 with ř). Common in words like:
