Cyrillic Layouts Compared — ЙЦУКЕН RU vs UA vs BY
The Cyrillic alphabet is used by many languages — Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian, Mongolian. Each language has slightly different letters, and the keyboards reflect those differences. This guide compares the three ЙЦУКЕН variants (RU, UA, BY) plus the unique Bulgarian БДС.

Russian ЙЦУКЕН — the original
The base ЙЦУКЕН layout, designed for Russian in the early 20th century.

Ukrainian ЙЦУКЕН (UA) — minor changes
Same as Russian for most letters, but:
- і replaces ы (home row, left ring position)
- ї replaces ъ (top-right corner)
- є replaces э (home row, right pinky stretch)
- ґ added at bottom-left
- No ё (Ukrainian doesn't use it)
- Apostrophe ' replaces ъ at the top-right

Belarusian ЙЦУКЕН (BY) — two key swaps
Like Russian, but:
- ў replaces щ (top-row right ring position)
- і replaces и (bottom row)
- No щ (Belarusian doesn't use it)
- Apostrophe instead of ъ
A Russian typist switching to Belarusian needs to memorize 2 character swaps. Much closer to Russian than Ukrainian. See ЙЦУКЕН (BY).
Bulgarian БДС — completely different
БДС is not ЙЦУКЕН-based. Completely different design philosophy (vowels-left, consonants-right — Dvorak-style).

Macedonian and Serbian Cyrillic
Macedonian uses a unique Cyrillic layout (similar to ЙЦУКЕН but with Macedonian-specific characters ѓ, ќ, ј, ѕ, љ, њ, џ).
Serbian Cyrillic uses a layout similar to Macedonian (shared letters like ћ, ђ, ј). Serbian also has a separate Latin script standard (QWERTZ-HR equivalent).

Can I type Russian with the Ukrainian layout?
Mostly yes, but you'd miss ы, ъ, э, ё. Doable for casual messaging; not ideal for professional Russian writing.
Is Bulgarian БДС really that different?
Yes — completely different layout. Bulgarian designers started from scratch in 1978 to optimize for Bulgarian letter frequencies.
What about Old Church Slavonic?
Specialized; uses an extended Cyrillic alphabet. Liturgical typing needs custom layouts. Not commonly supported.
Why is ё so important in Russian?
ё (yo) is the 7th letter of Russian alphabet. Many casual writers omit the dots and use е, but formal Russian text requires proper ё.
Are there Phonetic Cyrillic layouts?
Yes — "Russian Phonetic" maps Cyrillic letters to phonetically-similar QWERTY positions. Used by foreign learners; not by native Russian typists.
Which Cyrillic layout is fastest?
